The question is, can Kimberly somehow overcome her tremendous obstacles and find a way to live more like the sixteen-year old that she mentally is instead of like the sixty-something-year-old person she appears to be? The main character Kim is I saw this play as a brilliantly-read “flash mob” cold reading at KU last week.

Aug 02, Ann rated it liked it. Did not enjoy the ending. Cardona also has an exquisite sense of timing and is unafraid to pause and respond with a look or gesture. I’m not usually a fan of contemporary drama as I think it tends to be light on plot and heavy on shock value or at least those were the plays I saw preformed at UNottsbut this had just the right mix of dark humor, wackiness, and heart. KIMBERLY AKIMBO: A Unique Coming of Age Story

Luckily for all who make the effort to see this work, she is joined on stage by other cast members who each bring to their roles superb performances. Such is the case with the title character Kimberly, whose struggle at age sixteen to make it through normally turbulent adolescent years is continually challenged by parents who can barely manage their own lives and an aunt always on the prowl for the next swindle.
Directed by David Petrarca Creative: There must be something about a cold reading that brings out authentic emotion in people–the lines surprise the actors as they read them, as spontaneous as casual conversation. He compensates by agreeing to take her to a burger joint for some food, where they meet Jeff, the nerdy kid behind the window, who asks if Kimbefly can do an interview for his project. It also has some interesting characters some a little one-dimensional, but they develop throughout that would have to be great fun for the actors to portray.

Torsney-Weir fills the stage with her expertise in capturing and delivering to the audience every last nuance of this very complex akimbp. Dirik plays crazy Aunt Debra full on but also manages to layer her character with concern and empathy for Kimberly, which gives her performance more complexity.
